“If we do six cars a month, we’re okay. We cover everything that we run in this business. Some months we do 12, we have done 18 in the past, but on average it’s six.
“Select Nano has to remain the way it is, but at the same time industrial cleaning is not something I should neglect. I’m good at it, it’s good for the market, good for the economy, and it’s creating jobs, so there is possibly going to be a new venture into that in the next few weeks/months. That and the classic car restorations.”

This is THE next step for Select Nano, given not only an almost tangible enthusiasm for classic cars throughout the workshop but also with the help of a close network of colleagues from the surrounding area, some of whom have already offered their services on previous restorations: engine remapping; electrical work; tyre and wheel repair, etc. All for a very reasonable price.
“I buy them donuts every month. I’ve met a lot of very nice, interesting people in this neighbourhood, and sometimes I need their help. I don’t know anything about electrical work, but sometimes these services are needed. So I go begging to the guys around and about, even though I can’t really do things for them. So I just make sure the donuts keep coming in!”

Our conversation takes another left-turn towards family, friends, the Dubai automotive scene, and Freddy’s children – Farah-Helen (14), Basil (11), and Nina (8) – with whom he has been reunited along with his wife, Dima, after two years living apart. One day he assures me, with a smile on his face, they will love cars as much as he does. And yet despite this undoubted enthusiasm, there is one remark he makes shortly before I bid him adieu that throws me:

“We find a lot of our clients through word of mouth. We stopped advertising because I don’t believe in a lot of the publications in Dubai. Not all, but a lot of them. And there’s very few car magazines I read. Saying that we actually had an article in a newspaper recently about us. And oh boy, the next day, the following week, the following month, people were flooding in. That was a big draw.”
Precedence has clearly been set for crankandpiston then. Clearly this article has got to be good. And given Frederik and Select Nano’s attention to detail, that may prove a tall order!
