Today’s SOTD combines two epic features of automotive history. One is the Ferrari F40, which needs little introduction. And the other is the location – the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats, home of American speed for almost a century.
The F40 is the supercar icon of the late 80s, at the time the most powerful and expensive Ferrari ever made. Mid-engined, turbocharged, posters of Ferrari’s finest adorned the walls of a million children.
Bonneville, in Utah, USA, has been the world home of land speed records ever since 1914, when a Blitzen Benz hit a then-ridiculously quick 141.73mph/229.09kph. Since then it’s become best known for Speed Week, where competitors from across the globe gather to do one thing – drive or ride as fast as possible in a wide array of cars and bikes.
