Volvo had a bad run with the P1900 in the mid-1950s. The marque had hoped that its answer to the Chevrolet Corvette (yep) would walk out of the showrooms. Questionable build quality scuppered that plan though. Legend has it in fact that then Volvo President Gunnar Engellau, after a weekend driving the P1900, declared “I thought it would fall apart”.

Thankfully its successor – the P1800 – proved more popular, selling close to 48,000 units during a production run that lasted twelve years. Not hard to see why really. Those classic lines and charismatic presence paid for themselves.
