We’ve just stumbled across this great early on-board footage from practice at the 1978 Canadian Grand Prix. We’re riding with the late Patrick Depailler as he threads his Tyrrell-Ford 008 around a soaking wet Circuit Île Notre-Dame (now the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve) in Montreal, oversteering and wheelspinning all the way.

This was in the days before on-board cameras were commonplace and it’s a great example of the quick reactions and sensitive throttle foot needed to drive a 1970s F1 car. Depailler went on to finish fifth in the race despite suffering technical problems.
