Skoda is to make a performance variant of its upcoming all-electric model, if recent reports are to be believed. Destined to go under eRS branding, the new models should share a similar combination of accessible performance and subtle styling upgrades, all underpinned by the VW group’s new MEB bespoke electric platform.
Skoda’s first bespoke electric vehicle is to be based on the Vision E Concept from the 2017 Frankfurt motor show and should be on sale by the end of 2020. Sharing many core components with VW’s own I.D hatchback, it’s this model that is likely to be the first to feature the eRS branding.
Speaking with our sister title Auto Express, Alain Favey, Skoda’s board member for sales and marketing, confirmed: ‘There will be electric versions of vRS – eRS. The logic is the same, it’s not about performance as such. It’s about experience, and that’s something we can do very well in our future electric cars.’
Favey also confirmed that Skoda will only offer its upcoming EV with one battery output, leading us to assume that the eRS treatment will consist of chassis tuning and re-jigged styling. Skoda is aiming for a 483-kilometres range for the new model, leading to a safe assumption that the pricing will be at the upper echelon of Skoda’s current range, around $40k, likely due to the large battery pack required to reach that range.
Thankfully, the vRS brand will still play an important part in Skoda’s future line-up, with the next Fabia finally being considered for the vRS treatment when it arrives in 2021.
