Okay, perhaps not ‘awesome’ in the conventional sense of the term, since the company car of choice during the 90s/’00s is unlikely to be the first model most tin top fans think of fondly. There’s no denying a formidable record though. In the first three years of the World Touring Car Championship, the E46/E90 Beemer (having already snagged the final two European Touring Car Championship crowns) extended its run to five titles with a WTCC hat trick, ’05-’07, courtesy of Britain’s Andy Priaulx. It also took six of the 15 contested Swedish Touring Car championship titles (including the final one for Richard Göransson in 2010), and was the vehicle that brought former CART champion Alex Zanardi his first international motorsport victory after losing both his legs. Take a leap back into the annals, and you’ll find the E36 318i conquering the British Touring Car waters with Will Hoy (’91), Tim Harvey (’92), Jo Winkelhock (’93), and more recently Colin Turkington (’09) in the 320si E90. Success can be awesome albeit not quite as popular. Just ask Sebastien Vettel.
