The oldest design on our shortlist is the 1997 Alfa Romeo Scighera. It was a fully operational concept by Italdesign, featured a mix of light weight aluminium and carbon construction and went like stink while handling the very best thanks to four-wheel drive. It makes an appearance here for a very simple reason, doesn’t it remind you a little of a certain Bugatti? What is the point in designing a car we all want then not producing it only to have another manufacturer ‘borrow’ the design and be ever so successful?
Staying with Alfa Romeo is the Pandion Concept designed by Bertone. Crazy and futuristic with a whole host of new technologies it might be but the underpinnings are from an 8C Competizione and that means it can shift. Perhaps the integrated lights on the seats and backwards tilting doors are a bit too flamboyant for some but fans of Tron would be happy.
The Maserati Birdcage 75th was designed and built by Pininfarina to celebrate the company’s 75th anniversary. It was constructed on a spare carbon fibre chassis from a Maserati MC12 GT1 race car that must have just been lying around the workshop looking for a new home. The V12 engine from the MC12/Enzo has been slightly tuned for the Birdcage and rounded up to 700bhp. We want. So, why you no build?
And finally, just to bring things back down to terra firma, is the Ford Bronco Concept. This concept was revealed almost a decade ago and Joe Public loved it. This wasn’t some space age super car or design folly. It didn’t feature anything overly extravagant or complicated. In fact, it featured a two-litre turbo diesel engine and just looked like it was ready for business. What gives Ford?
