There is a problem with driving a convertible muscle car. I know that sounds ridiculous but the reason is simple: the experience only really comes alive when the car powers away from standstill. Until last week, the only opportunity we’d had was a two hundred yard sprint between red lights in the Marina region. And even then, late manoeuvring taxis made this difficult.

So when crankandpiston was invited to the inaugural running of Chevy Knights – a Chevrolet owners club catering exclusively, on this occasion, to Camaros – we would have let both ourselves and our massive down if we’d RSVP’d in the negative.

Our starting point was outside the Al Ghandi dealership in Dubai. Come 3pm, the street was awash with some of the finest examples of Camaro muscle gracing the city. Our next step was the 90(ish)km jaunt to the Yas Drag Racing Centre in neighbouring Abu Dhabi. After all, where better to test the Camaro’s brutish grunt than this purpose built quarter-mile stretch of tarmac?

Several lessons were learnt en-route. First, no matter how hard we tried, a convoy of 30-something Camaros hogging the inside lane of a highway will cause traffic to build up. At present, we’re not too sure how many iPhone pictures of the Management Fleet Camaro are circling the internet.

Second, even though driving with the roof stowed in mid-30 degree heat helped us get some great action shots, our ever-reddening forearms paid the price. And third, even though we left Dubai a bunch of sophisticated, debonair Chevy enthusiasts, we arrived at Yas Island a giggling mess. Several times our Management Fleet SS and its playmates were ‘politely encouraged’ to return to the inside lane.

Once our convoy had parked up, we took our camera lens for a quick flick around before the activities go underway, and were soon arguing over our favourite designs. As for our Camaro, planting the right boot has yet to become a bore, and probably won’t any time soon. Granted a low-line roof has made the optimum seating position a bit awkward: reclining the driver’s seat almost horizontally is the only way this particular six-foot-plus tall C&P rep can get any headroom. And yet, in a muscle car this just feels, well, right.

Our activities included a few quick bursts in the circuit’s purpose-modified Camaro fleet (0.5s reaction time and a 180kph top speed, not bad). And yes, come the end of proceedings, we made sure our Management Fleet representative also enjoyed some time on the strip.
