Having mistaken the panel in the floor of the boot for the access hatch to the spare wheel, this process takes slightly longer than I’d care to admit (I even resort – shock, horror – to using the instruction manual). Once that is done – give or take the odd scuffed knuckle and a bruise where the back of my head makes contact with the remarkably heavy boot lid – all that is needed is to trip over the items that have been removed from the boot, and depress the ‘open roof’ button. Don’t expect lightning speed: you’ll be waiting the better part of 25 seconds.

There’s no doubt that the Infiniti looks the business with the roof down, being all angles and elongated bodylines. It’s just a bit of a shame that now the backseat is littered with a camera tripod, a freebie Ducati rucksack, and a few discarded magazines. There was though still room for one thing in the boot.

If you’re planning a long weekend in the Infiniti, you’ll get a kick out of the wind rushing through your fringe. Just make sure you don’t need too much more than a new shirt and a spare pair of socks.

All is forgiven though when we start to pick up pace a little further down the coast. The temptation to push the V6 stapled down under the bonnet is always there, and once or twice I flick the seven-speed automatic into manual just to give the flappy paddles a quick workout (the gearbox does add a healthy dose of dynamism when you’re on it). There’s more than enough grunt to get me grinning quickly, and plenty of heft at the wheel to keep the front tyres in line.

The focus this afternoon may well be on the cruise to the coast (the ergonomic leather seats and the ample head and legroom mean comfort is a given), but it turns out this roadster has some bite too.
