A MINI is a car that you buy with your heart, rather than your head. Looking at it with an accountant’s mentality, it’s difficult for the MINI to make sense. Despite it’s increased size compared to the original 1950’s design, the MINI can only be considered to be a two seater. Yes, there are seats in the back, but they’re really only useful for additional luggage carrying capabilities. We squeezed one of our film crew in the back after a recent filming session and he was rather grateful that it was only a short drive back to the ranch. Even Emirates cattle-class has better legroom.
However, we’re not really concerned with such matters here – if you are bothered about rear space, then MINI offers the Clubman and the Countryman which deliver the same MINI-dynamics with some extra space for your brood.

But where the MINI – and especially the Mayfair – really shines is in the little details. No other car on the market offers quite so many options for customisation. If you’re willing to wait for your order to be made up at the Oxford factory and put on the slow boat to the region, you can make your own very unique MINI. With over 500,000 different variations of trim, colour, wheels and plenty else besides – you can really get your freak on with the options.
But not everybody has the time or inclination to do such things, so MINI helpfully puts together special editions from time to time which are nicely optioned up – and, in the case of the Mayfair, sometimes come with unique features.
Take, for example, the pinstripe detailing on the mirror caps and dashboard. The brown bonnet stripes – complete with white edging. And the brown leather seats with green contrast piping – sounds bad, actually looks rather good.

As this particular MINI is in Cooper S guise, it features the trademark bonnet scoop and the twin exhausts poking out of the back. With over 22,000kms on the clock, the MINI’s turbocharged engine is extremely loosened up and the pops and cackles that emanate from the pipes is a welcome sound to blow away the cobwebs in the morning.

One of the other great points about the MINI is how well it looks straight out of the box. Sure, a little suspension drop might be welcome to give a little more ‘stance’ – but apart from that, it’s nigh-on perfect. The black plastic wheel arches and bumper lips look great – painting them in body colour just looks wrong.
We’re sure gonna miss the MINI when it goes back…
