We have slowly introduced Project 4 Banger to you over the last few months and at long last, after a huge pile of procrastination, we are rolling with the work that she has been crying out for. As a quick recap, the little short wheel base 1968 Porsche 912 first came into my life just over eight years ago. At the time I was happily bumbling around Warwickshire in a 1961 double door split-screen Volkswagen campervan, which although being very cool and surprisingly fast (it was the quickest Type2 VW in the UK at the time), was knocked square off the park one Sunday morning. I popped down to Wembley in North London, for one of the famous cool car/swap meet days at the Ace Cafe in the Van and spied the little porker as soon as we rocked up.

Their sat in the corner, sparkling in the early morning summer sunshine, was the car you see before you. Suffice to say, the Van was popped on the market the next day and subsequently sold (they were hot property, even back then). Less than a month later and on the day of the England World Cup Rugby triumph, myself and good buddy, Rich, had packed up the car, nipped to the back and made a beeline for Slough to collect the new lady in my life.

Fast forward a bucket load of years and here she is. Now happily located in Dubai, enjoying the sunshine and preparing for a mid life make over. After being subjected to daily driving duties for nigh on five years and then life in a dingy basement car park in Cornwall, the dreaded tin worm had begun to get involved and there were some areas of road rash that needed taking care of.

So the rather massive call was made! Time to get the angle grinder, welder and paint gun out. Surgery was required! Jon and Richard from MSW in Dubai kindly stepped up to the plate and offered to get busy for us. The main affected areas were very rapidly dealt with as Richard got stuck in…

First things first… new metal was let into the scuttle areas.

Then the nasty repair piece that had been grafted (generous word) in on the passenger side wing, was fixed. This is pre repair in case you are wondering.

After just over a week of work with the team at MSW, Project 4 Banger was back on the drive way at my house and having a thorough check over from Porschephile himself… Max McGovern (my youngest). General consensus was the work was superb and the next step in the process was due.

A quick call to FibraRecovery (a sub company of FibraFoil in case you are wondering) was made and the guys appeared in a flash, ready to move the old lady onto it’s next location. This one would be home for a couple of months though and gladly brought back a much needed parking spot at chez McGovern. Either way, we now had more than enough time to get the details of the build sorted out and more importantly, all the goodies ordered up and delivered from Roger Bray Restorations in the UK.

And here she is… Work has already started and the team at XService in Dubai are getting well stuck in. David Tyrell from House of Cars will be project managing the build for us, so gladly she is in good hands.

We will be taking you through a step by step build as it progresses, so keep checking back to see the project unfold. The final look and feel has been pretty much settled on and will be a welcome and massive change from it’s current guise.

    • Just swung by this morning to sit and go through a bits and bobs. She is coming along nicely. As you say… the tin worm didn’t make it too far at all.
