6. Mercedes 190E Cosworth
Firstly, I am NOT suggesting the Evolution I or II; these are incredibly rare and should not be messed with. Right, glad we cleared that up. You could probably go for either the 185bhp 2.3-litre (pre 1988) or the 202bhp 2.5-litre after that (both 16v and rear-wheel-drive), but the 2.5-litre is my choice because of its double-row timing chains – much more reliable than single.
Originally built for rallying as a partnership between Mercedes and British company Cosworth, these models, being rear-wheel-drive these are surprisingly perfect for drifting – they are going up in price, though, so you may have to hunt around for one.
