5. Alex Wurz brake checks an SUV – German Formula 3, Avus 1995
Back in 1995, Alex Wurz was a German Formula 3 driver aiming to get to F1. During a race at the Avus circuit, Wurz was leading and tried to overtake the safety car as it race towards an incident. He successfully passed before Avus’ famous hairpin, but as he cut in front and braked for the corner, he forgot that the very large safety car didn’t have the same deceleration capability as his little single seater. The safety car locked its wheels and ploughed into Wurz, removing him from the race.
