Now we’d like to celebrate twenty years of the USLMRA. That’s the United States Lawn Mower Racing Association if you’re not already an aficionado.
Established on April 1 1992 (no seriously), the Association travels to fairs, festivals and car shows across over a dozen US cities to compete in a series of races to decide the event’s victor. As with most championsh…er, series, an outright winner is inaugurated at the end of the season.
Given that many of the top class machines – powered by four-stroke engines – can reach 100kmh, you’d be unwilling to mow the lawn with one, the competitors/members often doubling up as mechanics throughout the events.
This year the Association celebrates its 20th anniversary, which has included 12hr endurance events, the fastest lawn mower in the world – the Dixie Chopper Jet – on pace car duties, and 125+kmh sprint races at the Bristol Motor Speedway. Even the Wall Street Journal showed an interest at the 15 year mark.
Safety, sportsmanship, camaraderie and a strong sense of humour remain the Association’s watchwords. We hear the neighbouring gardens are spotless too >>>
