Group C Porsche 962 from 1989 is taken for a spin at Donington Park by former British Touring Car Champion Andrew Jordan.
“I planned on talkin’ a little bit more during that, but to be honest…I couldn’t!”
If ever there was non-blasphemous reaction to the Porsche 962C that summed up what the legendary 770bhp machine is like to drive, the above quote from 2013 British Touring Car Champion Andrew Jordan is a pretty solid one. Jordan has been let loose in the former Joest Racing Group C model from 1989 as part of Goodwood’s promotion for the upcoming Festival of Speed. And if you’ve recently seen Chris Harris’ thoughts of the Jaguar XJR-9 and are keen to see another period Group C ‘road’ test, then this shouldn’t disappoint. Jordan even has some classic Formula 1 company during his run at Donington Park, the Marlboro McLaren looking suspiciously like a former James Hunt M23 from 1975. Cue shameful segue into our classic M26 photoshoot in Dubai…
Now while the 956/962 boasts an enviable record at the biggest endurance race of them all – six on the bounce at the 24 Hours of Le Mans – this particular model, chassis #11, didn’t quite make it to victory road at La Sarthe. It did however boast the privilege of being the last Porsche to win a world sports car championship race in 1989 until the 919 Hybrid took the chequered flag in Sao Paolo in 2014. Chassis #11 would also win the final race it competed in during 1993, just one year before the 962 was pulled from competition.
