New Ford GT racer is the slowest vehicle ever around Silverstone. Sort of…
In perhaps one of the strangest marketing campaigns we’ve come across yet from the Blue Oval, Ford has just set a new ‘record’ with its new World Endurance Championship-contending GT…for the slowest lap ever of the Silverstone International Circuit. Which took a whopping 2 hours 20 minutes. And we thought the now retired Nissan GT-R LMP1 Nismo was a dawdler…
Obviously there are a couple of asterisks that should be added here. Firstly, the race-spec GT wasn’t travelling under its own steam – it was actually in a ‘Clear Idea’ transport truck – and wasn’t actually on the Northamptonshire circuit at all. Instead, in a neat little ruse, both truck and Ford actually followed a 19km replica of Silverstone in the heart of London, a canny way to grab the attention of onlookers, commuters, and pretty much anyone with access to an iPhone and instagram.
No doubt Olivier Pla, Stefan Mücke and Billy Johnson will each be hoping their #66 GT will make slightly more rapid headway on the GT’s debut this weekend at the 6 Hours of Silverstone ahead of its much-hyped Le Mans return, as will Marino Franchitti, Harry Tincknell and three-time World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx in the sister #67 entry. And since we’re far too busy and important to go over them again, you can find details on the new Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GT racer HERE.
