Ford unveils the brand new Shelby GT350 Mustang, a tribute to the late great Carroll Shelby that boasts the most powerful naturally aspirated Ford production engine ever.
[Not a valid template]Now, for those of you through watching what an 845hp ’65 Mustang can do, perhaps now you’d like to check out something a little more…contemporary.
This is the brand new GT350 Shelby from Ford, and as you may have guessed from the name, it’s a new tribute to the late, legendary Carroll Shelby.
Described as ‘the most ambitious powertrain program [Ford] has ever done’, the new GT350 – the name of which is derived from the original 1965 model that established Mustang’s performance credentials – runs via a 5.2-liter V8 that produces ‘more than 500hp’, making it the most powerful naturally aspirated Ford production engine ever. Torque peak of the high-revving V8 – mated with a lightweight six-speed manual transmission – sits above 400lb ft, while the unit is also the first Ford production V8 built with a flat-plane crankshaft, traditionally used in racing.
Torsional stiffness has been improved by 28 percent, while the increased power is sent to the road via extra-stiff 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels clad with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres with GT350-specific sidewall construction. Aerodynamics have also made a significant impact on the new GT350: the new aluminum hood for instance has been lowered and sloped, and simultaneously wrapped around the engine bay for reduced drag
