crankandpiston.com goes behind the scenes with Luke Fink’s BMW E46 M3 and its screaming V10 at the recent Drift King of Desert Pro Series in Abu Dhabi
Given that he had only 10 laps of pre-event practice going into the Drift King of Desert Pro Series event at Yas Marina recently, fifth place was a pretty amazing result for Aussie Luke Fink, give or take a couple of broken driveshafts, steering rack issues and a broken alternator. But it’s unlikely most fans will remember the result. Why? The car.
It’s a BMW E46 M3, packing an ‘S85’ 5-litre V10 sourced from an E60 M5, so you know it’s got some decent poke (stock, the S65 kicks over 500bhp, and Luke is confident the team has extracted another couple of hundred for his E46) and a scream so deafening from the side-mounted exhausts that crankandpiston’s AJ – who shot the above video – is still wondering when the ringing in his ears will stop.
It took Kinetechnik Motorsport just over a week to complete the E46’s heart transplant – that’s including aftermarket camshafts, a new intake manifold, and a remapped ECU – and if you’re wondering just how close Fink came to no-showing the event, these were the first testing laps at Yas the Bimmer had done. And this was shot at 2am the night before. Close call
