*NOW UPDATED WITH VIDEO* Chevrolet reveals new 640hp supercharged Camaro ZL1 and brand new ten-speed automatic gearbox.
[Not a valid template]Chevrolet has given its mental ZL1 range another dig in the ribcage courtesy of a 640hp supercharged V8 and brand new ten-speed automatic gearbox on the new, sixth generation Camaro ZL1.
Tailored specifically for the ZL1, the LT4-spec V8 produces 640hp and 868Nm (640lb ft) of torque, some 60hp and 114Nm (84lb ft) more than the outgoing model. Performance figures are expected to be gargantuan when they’ve announced. Though the unit will be mated as standard to a six-speed manual, the ZL1 also marks the first application for Chevrolet of its ten-speed automatic gearbox, a system set to be introduced on a further eight General Motors models before the end of 2018.
‘Designed for performance’, beneath those aggressive new looks lies Magnetic Ride suspension and an updated Brembo brake package, as well as Camaro Six’s newer, leaner and stiffer chassis. Tweaks to the bodywork include a new bonnet with carbon fibre insert, wider front fenders, a larger front splitter and a new rear spoiler, while the whole package rides atop 20in alloys, clad with Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar performance rubber.
Inside the changes are more slight, save a new flat-bottomed steering wheel, Performance Data Recorder, and Recaro seats. Your wallet can also breathe a sigh of relief though , since the ZL1’s track-ready package – previously an optional extra – now comes as standard, complete with 11 heat exchangers for optimal engine cooling.
Little else left to say other than click play on the below video and listen to that supercharged V8 whilst riding on-board. Just try and ignore the techno score…
