When a company begins its press material by casually mentioning a Nürburgring laptime – in the BMW M4 GTS’ case, 7m 28s – then you know performance is pretty high on their agenda. With new details having been dropped ahead of the model’s Tokyo Motor Show debut, the M4 GTS is powered by the same 3-litre TwinPower turbo six-cylinder as the standard M4 albeit one that now produces 500hp, 442lb ft of torque, and nails 0-100kph in just 3.8 seconds, on par with an Audi R8 V10 Plus, Lotus Exige S, and (of all things) Caparo T1. Top speed has also been elevated from the traditional electronically limited 250kph to 305kph. Completing the drivetrain, an updated seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission is mated to the six-cylinder
Following a tradition of special edition BMW M models that include the M3 GT, M3 CSL, M3 GTS and M3 CRT, key to the new M4 GTS’ design was lightness, BMW engineers establishing a 1510kg kerb weight by incorporating lightweight carbon-fibre bucket seats (complete with six-point racing harness), door and side panel trim (plus door pull loops in place of solid door handles) and a lightweight centre console.
Significant updates to the exterior include carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) constructed bonnet and front splitter, an adjustable rear wing, a carbon fibre rear diffuser, and an exhaust system tipped with new titanium muffler that offers what the company calls ‘an emotionally rich soundtrack that fits the M profile’. M light-alloy wheels meanwhile are shod with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber for additional grip, whilst the three-way M coilover suspension have ben specifically tuned for the GTS to improve road holding. New lightweight M carbon ceramic brakes lasso the 500hp six-cylinder under deceleration.
With performance also comes exclusivity, the ‘sharpest BMW M4 of all’ set for a limited production run of just 700 units.
