He’s spent three years in the World Rally Championship wilderness, give or take a NASCAR Truck event or two. But now Kimi Raikkonen is making his return to Formula One, and only one question is doing the rounds. The same question asked of Michael Schumacher when his four-year sabbatical came to an end: has he still got what it takes to win?
Truth be told, nobody knows. Nobody will know until those five red lights go out in Melbourne. Even though he’s raced, and beaten, the Fernando Alonsos, the Jenson Buttons, the Lewis Hamiltons, and (briefly) the Sebastien Vettels of this world, a lot can happen in three years, especially at the top of the motorsport pyramid.
Rumours suggest Kimi’s placated. That the weariness which drove him from the sport to begin with is gone, and that the sixth World Champion on the grid is hungry for title number two. For 2012, the Iceman cometh. For how long though…? >>>
