Volkswagen reveal at Worthersee what a race-prepared Golf GTI might look like with a 296bhp one-off concept.
What happens when you take a Volkswagen Golf GTI – which by the way we’ve just taken for a hoon around southern France – and leave Michael Bay alone with it for five minutes? Chances are you’ll end up with an introductory video like this about a car like the VW Design Vision GTI.
This special one-off design study recently made its debut at the Worthersee Volkswagen event in Austria, and offered the 200,000 fans in attendance the chance to see what a racing version of the Golf GTI might look like. That includes being 57mm lower, 71mm wider and 15mm shorter than the standard model.
From the 3.0-litre twin turbo V6 comes 496bhp and 413lb ft or torque, up from the standard 217bhp and 258lb ft respectively chucked out by the 2.0-litre four cylinder unit. Chuck in a DSG gearbox, select amounts of carbon fibre and a larger rear diffuser for improved downforce, and the Design Vision GTI will hit 0-100kph in 3.9 seconds and a 299kph top speed.
Those of you now reaching for your wallets can relax. There’s only one sadly, and there’s no plans for a production ready version on the horizon.
