One of the added difficulties is that the surface is uneven, as is the level of grip. The natural coping mechanism in this situation is to turn the wheels to correct the angle, however, as I learned on day one, dialing in too much steering causes the back end to rapidly step out. Instead, gentle feathering of the throttle with minimal steering input is enough to maintain the drift, stay tucked-in to the inside bank and circle the track sideways. There is an enormous sense of achievement in getting this right. Getting it wrong involves stuffing the Golf in to the inner, and occasionally outer, snow bank.

The next exercise links our massive circle to another equally massive circle in a giant figure of 8. Same procedure as before with the added difficulty of switching the drift at the half way mark. Experience from the slalom course helps considerably here and the key is to switch the drift early and get tucked back in to the inside. The change in direction is also a relief as continually lapping the previous circle was making us all feel a little dizzy.

A few enjoyable lighthearted exercises follow including a J-turn penalty shoot out with a massive football and a bit of drifting in a Polaris RZR. Both activities are a lot of fun but there is no hiding the fact that we are all itching to get out on track in our Golfs.

The first of the series of tracks we are going to tackle is a relatively simple layout consisting of alternating left and right turns varying in tightness. Turn in and visual aiming points have been marked for us with red and blue cones and it surprises me just how far before the corner we are being recommended to initiate the turn. A few familiarization laps follow as a group before we get unleashed on our own and attempt to put in to practice everything we have learned.
