Taking the first right-hander tight (the inside of the corner is your friend) I ease off the power a little and steer to the left as I reach the first turning marker – still at least 15 metres away from the left-hander ahead. The back end breaks away and, straightening the wheels, I squeeze the power in gently. The Golf drifts over to the inside of the next corner and I nail the apex. Repeating this process for each corner I sail gracefully around my first lap, only fouling-up once when I run wide on a tight right and have to ease off the power until I have almost come to a complete stop.

It has been a successful first run and it is immediately clear how the various exercises the Volkswagen Team have challenged us with combine to be able to put in a clean lap. My steering and throttle input have been gentle and unhurried and I have begun to trust in the physics involved, initiating the turn early and believing the Golf and I will make it round the next corner unscathed (even though the wheels are pointing in the wrong direction). Time to sink the boot then and see how fast I can go.

Over the next few laps I pick up the pace considerably and with this increase in speed comes the increasing pendulum motion I experienced on the slalom course. My steering input has become much more jerky as I attempt to save the Golf from switching ends and then the inevitable happens. On that same tight right-hander I run wide again only this time I am carrying too much speed. I attempt to save it, spin and end up beached on top of the outside snow bank. Arse.

Fortunately, Raphael is on hand in the Volkswagen Touareg recovery vehicle to pull me out and is kept extremely busy over the next few hours by us all as we explore our limitations. He also seems to revel in the opportunity to demonstrate his drifting ability in the big SUV and arrives to the rescue each time completely sideways.
