Sometimes mainstream just doesn’t cut the mustard. That’s not a knock at what the mainstream manufacturers are up to at the moment, as there are a fair amount of them really pushing the boundaries and stepping away from the “eurobox” syndrome that has ripped through the car industry over the last decade. However there will always (we certainly hope so) be people like Rich Olafsson out there that just have the desire to be continually different. Stepping out and into the light of self generated creativity and awesomeness.
Now before we get going, we know this has no relation to the Middle East and although we know that the levels of creativity witnessed here are possibly as high as anywhere else in the world, sometimes projects like this just stand out from the crowd.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and being good friends with Rich for the better part of ten years. It all started back in leafy Warwickshire where the love of all things VW/Porsche brought us together. At the time I was banging around in a full on Cal-Look ’56 Oval window bug that had been rescued from a barn in Sweden with 12000kms from new. I had proceeded to rip its heart out and drop a street/strip set-up in the back and enjoyed blatting it around scaring the life out of the local hot hatch crew.
Rich however was already flexing his creativity and was rocking a Chesil Porsche 356 Speedster replica with a Subaru turbocharged lump hanging out back. To say that this little bath tub was a bit lairy would be an understatement. It’s ability to punch through the time continuum barrier was tricky to get used to and for anyone brave enough to take a trip in the passenger seat, it was a story generator.
Just before we carry on, the picture above was shot just prior to Rich, Luke Ray (he of the awesome Fuel Magazine) in his killer Porsche 914 and myself headed off to a car show across the other side of the UK. Good memories and certainly a sight cruising down the M1 in the fast lane at 140kph.

As with all projects the Speedster was sold on after it was finished as the creative drive had just fizzled out. Next on the list was a little car called a GTM Libra and then Rich fell for a Phantom GTR that he had heard of through a friend of a friend. Both cars felt the touch and popped out the other side far better for it. Gladly though, the VW virus just couldn’t be shaken off and a Karmann Convertible made it’s way into Rich’s life. The 1973 RHD example seemed very clean and would make the perfect canvas for him to get ripping into. Well – So he thought!

After bumbling around in the bug, Rich decided it was time to get going. So the strip down began and almost immediately there was the realisation that he had bought a bit of a dud. Terrible repairs and rust where the order of the day. Never one to be deterred though he made the call to carry on…with a job that was now far larger than ever thought. But in typical Rich fashion it gave him the opportunity to really get the creativity gene working.

And there we go. A full custom chassis, engineered to take the proposed power plant, gearbox and suspension upgrades complete. It might be worth noting here that Rich does all of this work in a single garage outside his house. Says a lot in my book.

To make space for the proposed Porsche G50 gearbox, Rich had to get creative. As you can see from this picture the chassis was modified with a steel tube hoop over the nose of the gearbox and a transmission tunnel built in to the body. In his typically complete approach Rich used the edge flange from the old crossmembers to preserve a factory appearance and also left a small gap for the body gasket.

You can really start to see the rear end shaping up here. A pair of pro-tech dampers were used for the rear end and with further custom chassis touches they were about perfect for the heavier engine and trans.

Speaking of the transmission. Here is the Porsche G50 unit that Rich decided early on that just had to be included in the car. Bullet proof and capable of handling mega power, it was the perfect choice. Even though it took more than a couple of hours to figure out how it would be integrated into the car.

So we have the chassis, the power and a gearbox to handle what ever can be thrown at it. What about stopping? After all it’s pretty important in the scheme of things. Not to worry, we have Porsche 996 anchors in each corner. No cutting corners there then! I don’t think I need to explain that it wasn’t an easy exercise to get the fitted and working but Rich happily rose to the challenge.

Wide wings to house the extra rubber attached to the Porsche wheels? Not to worry – “I’ll make me own” said Rich! Now 45mm wider Rich wanted to widen the wings so they would look as close to stock as possible and keep the additional width to an absolute minimum. The end result is a near stock appearance and ample clearance down to the bumpstops.

Now Rich is on the long slog to the finish line. All the tricky stuff is pretty much complete and the oily bits are pretty much all back in. With the interior, roof and trim to complete it won’t be long until the key turns for the first time. I for one want to be back in the UK for when it happens. Having been in and out of the project for the better part of six years it feels like the birth of a game changer in VW circles.
